CJS Sales: The Best Vintage Jewelry Supplies Warehouse in New York

Early last month Tim and I spent a week in NYC and had a chance to stop into our very favorite jewelry supplies warehouse in the city, CJS Sales: Crafts Jewelry Supplies. That's me up there, making my through the chain supply room — in utter heaven!

I've written about this amazing (magical!) place here on the blog before, and wanted to share more from our most recent trip since it's been such a popular post we continue to get lots of questions about. For the full rundown with directions on how to find CJS (a 5,000 square foot jewelry supply warehouse hidden in the heart of Manhattan) and tips for shopping wholesale while there, check outthis writeup we did last winter.

The thing is, this space is a bit of a secret. When jewelry designers find an amazing source after years of research and travel, it's something that becomes a bit "hush-hush" in the industry. As you know by now, Tim and I are much more about sharing, plus the beauty about CJS is their specialization in one-of-a-kind vintage and closeout stock. It's not like anyone can waltz in, get the same exact supply and compete on prices — it's more like, if you're there and see something you like, you better buy it ASAP, because there's a great chance it'll be gone the next day.

It's also just one of those places that's an experience to visit. You won't find another place like it and it's worth dropping in as a place to see if you've never been. You'll find room after room of wall-to-wall and stacked-to-the-ceiling boxes filled with vintage jewelry supplies and all sorts of other things. Tim walked all around, capturing these pics while I sat, sifting through different boxes:

It would be impossible to go through everything in one visit — which is both exciting and a little terrifying for a personality like mine. I love the element of surprise, but also like feeling like I've seen everything there is to see in a place before moving on.

Here I am again, sorting through the chain in an entire room filled with vintage and deadstock chains in every make and finish you can imagine:

I'm always on the hunt for finished vintage brass necklaces, which can be hard to come by in general, so it's always fun to sort through and find exactly what I'd been hoping for.

While the warehouse specializes in vintage jewelry supplies, there is so much more to this place! You never know what you'll find from trip to trip...

If you are a collector or purveyor of vintage supplies, jewelry or general goods, this place is for you too. Every time we visit, Elyse (half of the father/daughter duo that run CJS) always has new vintage finds to show us — this time we left with a tote full of jewelry supplies among other things, like belt buckles, deadstock tie clips, designer Judith Leiber travel combs, trinket boxes and even vintage shaving razors with Art Deco appeal. I'm telling you, it's a treasure trove and that element of surprise is what keeps us coming back.

Elyse knows I love vintage supplies with a little patina, hollywood rhinestone sparkle, anything with lockets or made of bakelite, and just plain old oddities so those are the things she saves for me to look at if she knows we're coming by or can point me in the direction of where to start digging.

Outside of my specific tastes, there is SO much more. As you saw from the photos above, there are walls filled with boxes of vintage glass beads, an entire room filled with vintage chain stock — if you can dream it, they've probably got it and then some.

If you're still interested, I'll show you all the things we brought home from this latest visit — it was a good mix of jewelry supplies and components for making new designs along with a bunch of deadstock vintage jewelry and accessories. We even happened upon a few oddities we couldn't leave without..

In terms of supplies, I was excited to find all sorts of things — from charms and raw pyrite beads, to vintage lockets, whistles and other components to rework into new jewelry:

I'm absolutely dying over this bunch of vintage stick pins with different shaped lockets attached — how amazing would these be as stand-ins for groomsmen boutonnieres or accessories for a wedding? I can't remember if there were more of these at the warehouse, but wish I'd scooped up the full lot of them if there were:

Similarly, we came across loads of mid century modern tie clips with different colored stones and even a few with pictures of golfers and different tool shapes:

One of my favorite things to source are full pieces of vintage jewelry. There are all sorts of designs and styles, all with a past and all waiting to have a second debut:

Along those same lines, there were some fun oddities we brought back like vintage shaving razors, belt buckles and a couple designer travel combs from the Judith Leiber collection:

Finally, it wouldn't be a vintage hunt without bringing home loads of chain necklaces for making jewelry with — don't you just love how it sparkles?

So! That's how we faired during this latest trip — and we're already looking forward to going back. I hope it was a fun look into one of our favorite places to visit in the city that's definitely off the beaten touristy path. If you're a designer or small business owner looking to make the trip to CJS, we wrote up another post with more info and another haul of supplies right here. And a few more details...

You'll need a tax id for your business to shop and come prepared to buy in a wholesale format — everything you find is typically sold by the bag, box, or lot. Because stock is limited and changing so frequently, prices vary, but Elyse is usually around and eager to answer questions!

Novasblossoms: Shopping Yesterday at CJS Sales: Crafts, Jewelry Supplies (Vintage Warehouse)

[Reblogged from Novasblossoms: Shopping Yesterday: WEDNESDAY, JUNE 25, 2014 ]

Shopping Yesterday
Before Vickie Adams Brown and I went to see the Charles James Exhibit at the Met Mus of Art, we did a little shopping at CJS Sales, a whole sale warehouse for all sorts of beads, crystals, jewelry finding and chain. The place is just JAM PACKED!!! You could get lost in there for a week and not see all of it. I found so many interesting things on the FLOOR!!! My purchases:

Over View. Cloissionne butterflies, sun charms, Star with moon charms, pointed stars, leaves with the most awesome patina, pearls (for eyes I'm thinking), pearl drops with wires, and beaded necklace that I plan to deconstruct for the awesome beads. There are metal shapes in the upper left that have a cool patina on them too. I tried them in my Sizzix, but they are too thick to emboss. Will add words with my mallet and letters.

These are metal pansies. Three different sizes, some are enameled, some are just gold. All have rings that can be used for chains, dangles, whatever but they can also be cut off. Love these. Can't wait to play with Ranger Patinas on them. Very detailed.

All of these strange charms came in one bag. I really love the horse, had, little violin, the starburst, so many buttons! I saw only the violin and the hat in the bag. The rest are a very pleasant surprise!

I got a bag of these lucite buttons. They don't have Rhinestones in them, it is an illusion but they chould be added. Swarski Crystals would work too. I added alcohol ink . The pink on the left has the ink applied to the BACK!!!! How cool is that! The dark pink has a heavy coat on the front. The turquoise has a light watered down coat on the front. Oh the possibilities. I see these as flower centers among other things. The people there, especially Kim, were just wonderful - giving everyone a guided tour of what was where. They also offered water and a cloth shopping bag to drag the loot home! Looking forward to going back.

New York City Trip

recently returned from an awesome trip to New York City for my brother's wedding in Central Park. Prior to my trip, I had happened to find a wholesale jewelry sales located in Manhattan not far from where we were staying. After seeing a few pics online and emailing one of their associates I knew I had to check this place out. It was a jewelry pickers paradise!! My best friend Shantell joined me and we hunted for treasure for several hours. Even for me, a seasoned hunter, I was overwhelmed with the 5,000 square foot place. There was so much to look through. At one point Shantell was almost buried alive when a stack of boxes fell on top of her! We laughed and continued on. I did manage to get quite a large haul though, which I will show some pics of in a later post. The place I went to was called CJS Sales and it is wholesale only, so you will need your business credentials if you go. A few tips, they sell by the pound, wear good shoes in case you step on something sharp and gloves would of come in handy. Overall, I had a fantastic vacation and the wedding in Central Park was lovely.

boxes full of surprises!

PBeads Blog: Skyscraper to Skyscraper

PBeads Blog: Skyscraper to Skyscraper: A follow to my article, page 32 of the current August 2014 Bead and Button:   I mentioned jobbing. A popular term in the eighties, jobbi...On My last Visit to CJS, which is also on an UPPER floor not meant for the Public, I noticed this box of stones in envelopes. While I am not a stone person, i am a vintage Person, and i noticed that these packages marked "K.S. & co.", and "Made in Austria", both signs of Vintage. One Stamped N.Levy Corporation, another name I  have never heard of, and were out of Providence in the same box of Morris Berger goodies. I have always said that beads leave a trail: Memories, markings and for some, a maddening mining march!

Make a Trip to CJS Sales: New York City Warehouse Stocked with Vintage Jewelry Components By Pamela Wiggins

Make a Trip to CJS Sales: New York City Warehouse Stocked with Vintage Jewelry Components By Pamela Wiggins

Make a Trip to CJS Sales  —  New York City Warehouse Stocked with Vintage Jewelry Components By Pamela Wiggins [reblogged from About.com Antiques]
Boxes holding vintage stones at CJS Sales.
StoneBoxes
If combing treasure troves looking for jewelry making inspiration utterly delights you, CJS Sales in the heart of New York City beckons. The ever-changing supply of vintage jewelry components includes stones, beads, chain, and oodles of decorative findings. No matter what you craft in the jewelry sphere, you’ll be hard-pressed to walk away empty handed.
The boxes and boxes of loot warehoused here have been assembled by owners Carl Schimel and his daughter Elyse through wholesale buyouts. When jewelry manufacturers and their suppliers go out of business or liquidate excess inventory, wholesalers like CJS Sales buy in quantity at reasonable prices. They then pass those savings right along to their customers making this a great place to stock up and save.
What to Expect Inside
With 5,000 square feet stocked with jewelry supplies and new shipments coming in regularly, you really never know what you’re going to find here. Yes, it takes some patience, persistence, and muscle to sift through box-upon-box of unusual jewelry-making components, but it can be well worth the effort. It’s often been called “bead and crystal heaven” by visitors, in fact.
dad1
What will you find? You’ll likely run across rhinestones including some made by Swarovski, pressed glass cabochons and stones, all types of metal findings and filigree, wooden beads and components, plastic beads and parts, Bakelite chips, rolls of chain, Lucite parts, cameos, seed beads of all sizes, Venetian beads, chandelier parts, and other unique items.
This place is not for beginners or customers that require a ton of assistance, however. Most successful shoppers go to be inspired by the unusual vintage components they happen upon rather than driving themselves crazy searching for specific items. Be sure to allot several hours, if not a half-day, when you visit if you want to get serious about finding things you can use.
Be Ready to Buy Wholesale
Be aware that this is a wholesale only business with no retail selling so you must show a tax exemption certificate, business EIN number, or international equivalent proof of business to shop here. When you come onto the floor someone will stop you and ask for wholesale credentials and a bit about what you do. They will then give you a tour of the warehouse while explaining pricing and how they operate in general.
The majority of the merchandise here is sold by the pound, although select items are sold by the piece, pack, or box. Everything is sold how the item is packaged, and there is absolutely no splitting of bags regardless if items are priced by the piece or by the pound.
Also keep in mind that they accept cash and credit cards only, so leave the checkbook at home.
ChainSpools
What Else to Know If You Go
CJS Sales is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., so weekend visits are not an option.
The business is located mid-block between Fifth and Sixth Avenues in an area with many jewelry supply houses. The location is a close walk from both Penn Station and Grand Central Station, and there is also a nearby subway stop at 35th Street and 6th Avenue. There is parking garage nearby on 36th Street with an alternate entrance on 35th as well if you’re driving into the city.
The entrance to the building at 16 West 36th Street is rather unassuming with no sign in the lobby, and you have to take an elevator up to enter CJS Sales. Once on the second floor, the doors open directly into the warehouse where you’ll see boxes stacked floor to ceiling.
Go prepared to dig, and wear comfortable clothing you won’t mind getting dirty to find the best stuff hidden in the stacks. Customers are also expected to know their stuff as employees on hand may not be able to help them distinguish between copper and copper coated steel, for instance.
